bushducks

Waking up early each morning with a freshly brewed cup of coffee in hand, I watched a pair of loons that frequently feed close to our shore. The tranquillity makes me wonder – is this what it was like over 50 years ago? How did my parents feel on that first morning so many years ago? I will always be grateful for the legacy for which I am now the keeper. Because of that, I dedicate this website to my mother, Mary and to the remembrance of my dad, A.J. (Jim) Lecuyer.

My memories of growing up in the tourist camp are both long hours of hard work, as well a lot of fun! The fishing, hunting and professional guiding I have been able to do have given me hours of pleasure and great memories. A lot of good friendship have developed over the years. My children and I look forward to all of our old friends returning each year. I feel very fortunate to be here and hope some day to be able to have my girls Lea and Amanda assume the responsibilities of running the lodge. Our goals for Tru-Tail Lodge have not changed – we want to make sure your experience at Tru-Tail is one you’ll remember for years to come. For this reason, like my parents before, we are constantly updating and expanding our services and facilities for your comfort. We are resolute to provide good service, quality food, good equipment, new motors, clean accommodations, good beds, lots of hot water, trustworthy, reliable and knowledgeable staff, and above all A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. We know that if you are happy, you will refer us to your friends, family and business associates.

We’ve designed this website to tell you a little about Lecuyer’s Tru-Tail Lodge, its facilities and its services. We do not intend this to take the place of personal correspondence but rather to provide you with some answers and to prepare you for your trip with us. For more information and reservations, I would be please to talk with you personally.

Moose

Lecuyer’s is located in a very unique area, in that besides the excellent white tail hunting areas. We also boast some prime moose hunting opportunities. We have some vast areas that have timber harvesting going on. These are ideal locations. The region boast nice pockets of animals. All areas are pre scouted by our pro hunting staff to help insure your success. We hunt both the “caps” cut over ridges and around the many small lakes and swamp areas. These are some of the largest bodied moose in North America.

Moose Hunting

We take nice racks each year ranging from 38″ to 55″. The package hunt is truly all inclusive, you need only bring your personal gear, guns and ammo. You are provided One pro staff hunting guide for each 3 hunters in your party. Additional guides are available at your request. A complete information package will be forwarded to you and your group once your booking has been confirmed with the lodge. As we have only a limited number of trophy hunts available each year you should contact the lodge well ahead of your targeted hunting dates to avoid disappointment in not getting to hunt this year or next.

Duck

We are uniquely located, half way up the east central side of Lake of the Woods. Here, countless shallow back water bays and ponds offer the largest mass of wild rice found on any lake in northwestern Ontario. Very large numbers of mallards, blue wing teal, wood ducks and black ducks nest in these area’s.

Don’t let others try to fool you on Ontario ducks. We are the MAIN STAGING AREA for northern flights on their way south. No other lake can boast both the numbers and length of time the ducks will stay. We are a full day and nights flight from the far northern breeding and nesting grounds. Here they stop to feed on our lush food source, and preen for their continued flight south.

This is not a hit or miss situation! You’ll find no excuse’s here. We attract the northern flights of mallards, ring necks, buffalo heads. Including major rafts of golden eye’s and blue bills. Our family has been in this area for over 75 year’s, and have catered to water fowler’s since our lodge was first established in 1946. We are not new to the hunt, and have catered to hunters from around the world. All our Pro Staff guides are professionally trained. We have ALL the equipment to insure you and your group a most successful hunting experience. Including several trained hunting dogs, over 800 decoy’s, military camo netting, a fleet of canoes, giant bail blinds, duck plucking machines. We use 21 ft. boats with full tops to transport your group to the different hunting areas in the darkness. Powered by 150 h.p. Motors or better. We leave smaller 16 ft. boats with 25 hp. motors all over the lake to transfer your group up into the shallow back waters.

Grouse

Perhaps no finer eating bird with its plump, juicy white breast meat. Like nothing you’ve seen before with their unique wings and fan like tail enabling fast flight and lightning turns. Truly one of, if not the finest upland game birds ever. Certainly the fastest for its size. We are centrally located amongst the strongest populations of ruffled grouse in all of Canada. As well, there are nice pockets of both sharp tail and the very beautiful spruce grouse. There is nothing more picturesque than walking down a colorful autumn trail. On still, sunny mornings or afternoons, you hear the sounds of songbirds and other wildlife playing melodies for you. Then, suddenly, you’re startled by the thundering sounds of feathers beating in the still air. Your gun comes up…lightning in speed by this time your bird banks a hard 90 strait into the bush, get the picture! There are miles of logging trails, and we also have our own special trails, no need to walk through the thick bush here. A very relaxing style of upland game hunting with plenty of close range shots.

grouse hunting

Men with grouseLimits are 5 per day, 15 in possession. As with any of our hunts, they are tailored to your group. Our upland game hunting is perhaps some of the finest in the world. Although some groups come exclusively for these birds, we can combined your grouse hunt with your duck hunt and fishing. Making for truly a most memorable fall trip ever.

Fishing

Nobody, but NOBODY, can hold a candle to the muskie action on the Lake of the Woods. The guys from far to the north to the guy from the south, east or west. Lake of the Woods hold the largest concentration of both numbers and size.

And you’ll be glad to know, it’s not a fish of 10, 000 casts on our lake. A true northwoods trophy. We have recorded releases to 57½” long. They must be 48″ long to be a legal catch. This assures both good numbers and large fish in our lake. Last year alone we saw over 93 legal caught, of which only 3 were kept. The rest were released by fisherman with a modern day attitude and a better understanding of the fish itself. Just so they could fight again another day. MUSKIES … all other fish are just bait!

Northern Pike

Routinely producing both in size and numbers. Great Northern Pike, with the average being in the 5-10 lb. range. True trophies, both taken and released up to 37 lbs. Fish need both the water and forage to become big. They also need the longer growing seasons – a norm on Lake on the Woods. The further north you go, the shorter the growing season. If you are looking for consistent Northern Pike fishing, and a great probability of catching that trophy, come fish with us. We have some real nice fish awaiting you arrival.

Walleye

More and more anglers are discovering that Lake of the Woods is a great place to fish for walleye. So good, in fact, that two of the premier fishing magazines in the country have written special articles naming this area as a “world-class” fishery.

“A solid 5 pound ‘eye (is) so common on Lake of the Woods these days that even a cooler full wouldn’t get a second look.” The 1991 edition of “In-Fisherman’s Walleye Guide” highlights this all-star lake as being one of the continent’s hottest bites. The article focuses on eight lakes that are becoming renowned for fantastic numbers of good fish couple with excellent numbers of trophies.

Lake of the Woods is the first lake featured in the article. “In-Fisherman’s” magazine explains that the resurgence of the walleye population, credited by some of the ban on commercial fishing, “rockets (Lake of the Woods) to a top spot on our number chart.”

And the average size of fish in the lake has rocketed also. Since 1984, the average size of walleye taken has risen from one to two pounds. The Ministry of Natural Resources reports that “the number of three to five-pound walleye is on the upswing and that trophies of up to 14 pounds are within reason.

An article also appears in the March edition of “Peterson’s Fishing” magazine. In that edition, a special section is given to the sport of walleye fishing with a special article on Lake of the Woods fishing. In the article, it is mentioned that Lake of the Woods is perhaps the only “world-class” walleye fishing left in the world! Come and find out for yourself what the pros are talking about!

Slab Crappie

Excellent for sure! In the spring we catch them in very shallow water. Mid-summer they are suspended. Then in the late summer they start moving to deep holes. Average sizes from ¾ lb. to 1¼ lb., with Crappie up to 2¾ lb. taken each year. In the fall, the schools can be graphed – up to 100 yards long and 20 yards wide. They make for fantastic pan fishing and they are the tastiest treat to eat. Because of our fine structure, we can boast the finest Slab Crappie fishing anywhere.

Lake Trout

Deep, cold water is what Lake Trout like. Just a 10 minute ride from the lodge, you’ll find one of the finest, most beautiful trout lakes you’ll ever want to fish.

Though this is the ONLY fish that we can’t brag about catching more of and bigger than our friends further north, we do boast action in the 3 – 10 lb. range. Kakagi Lake is very deep and crystal clear with visibility of 25′ or better. It’s filled with lots of islands and reefs, although it is not as protected as Lake of the Woods. Best catches are in the early spring and late summer.

Small Mouth and Large Mouth Bass

Islands, shallow rocky shorelines, weedy back bays and hundreds of reefs. These are what make up our lake. They are also the favorite places for big bass to be. Lake of the Woods just doesn’t have bass, it has EXCELLENT BASS’N. OUTSTANDING .. with more structure and cover than anyone could ever fish. Small mouth run in the 2-5 lb. range, with bass caught up to 7 lbs. just last year, very close to the lodge.

Our large mouth bass fishing just keeps getting better as well, ranging from 2-5 lbs. The largest caught this year was 7.9 lbs. Let’s see Florida grow them that big with only the same length of growing season we have!

Whitetail

whitetail buckLong before the great turnaround in the deer herds south of the Canadian border, this was the area known as the place to go if you were going to bag a big deer with heavy racks. And you know what? It still is! But if you’re looking for a fenced-in hunt like you’d get elsewhere, forget it. This is still and will always be the untamed north country. There are no sections quartered off, no roads every ¼ mile. Just a lot of great forested hunting land.

We are hunting on over one million acres of government land. Over 80 % of our hunts are done on they many islands and peninsulas that are on our lake. To grasp the tremendous mass of area we are hunting, you should first know this. The lake has over one million surface acres of water. Over 14,684 islands, more than 65,000 miles of shore line. Fact is, we need not ever hunt the same island or peninsula more than once. Providing every group that hunts with us, fresh untouched or previously disturbed trophy white tail opportunities. You will not ever see another orange hunting jacket except for your group!..

We take only a limited amount of hunters each year, helping to insure your success!…

Northwestern Ontario has consistently and will continue to produce heavier bodied ( the largest body size in north America ) and large racked deer. They are plentiful here. Racks ranging from 10 to 20 points are not uncommon. Field dressed, these deer are weighing from 225 to 300 lbs. average 255lb. The deer range from 130’s to mid 170’s typical, 165 to 250 non- typical. We recommend that you hunt whitetail with your own crossbow or compound bow. We have a wide selection of broadheads (fixed and expandable) for you to chose from, or you can bring your own. In addition to good hunting clothing, we suggest you bring your own hunting optics to improve accuracy – a good crossbow scope can make all the difference in your harvesting rates.

Consistently, harvesting a good 60% on an average year to a high of 75 % success rate or better on a great year !…

Were are uniquely situated. Lecuyer’s Tru-Tail Lodge is smack dab in the middle of the 6 best hunting zones in Ontario. These zones hold the highest concentration of deer. One of these zones has also been designated bow and muzzle loader exclusively and has been that way for several years. Lots of these deer have never seen man their whole life. Within minutes from the lodge you can be hunting that trophy buck you’ve always dreamt about.

Ontario hosts the second largest population of white tail deer in all of Canada!…

Whitetail Population Graph

We have a mix of terrain – from high rocky, heavily treed ground to low swampy areas and beaver ponds. There are over 1 million acres of boreal forest surrounding undoubtedly the finest forage, cover and protection that make for bigger, older deer. This is the best place for reclusive old bucks to get away from the hunting pressure. This is not a hunt for the weak or timid. This is perhaps the finest, true trophy white tail hunt left in north America. You must be in relatively good shape, as you may expect to walk 2 – 8 miles a day. You may also harvest a timber wolf at no extra charge on this hunt.

Less than 10 % of mature bucks in this area are harvested by hunters!… average age of deer harvested, 4.5 – 7.5 years of age. More mature bucks here, are killed by timber wolves and the winters that are so hard on old bucks!…

Deer and Men

Our hunts run 6 days and are buck only. Lecuyer’s Tru-Tail Lodge employs the finest qualified, most highly skilled guides available anywhere. These men love to hunt and love being in the bush. They respect it, gives back to them employment and food for the long, cold winters. They’ll employ for you all their secrets and techniques – all of the knowledge passed on to them from their fathers, whose only store back then was Mother Nature’s, and for the most part, still is.

We hunt peak rut times only, and after all foliage is off the under brush !…
All hunting areas have been pre scouted, to help insure a successful hunt!…

Here we use the three basic styles of deer hunts . . . tree stands, stalking and slow drives. The methods vary with the area your hunting, size of your party, weapons, weather, time of day, etc. This place has long been known by the few who were not afraid to venture forth as the place to bag BIG deer. Just ask around . . . talk to any old-timers who were here. They will all tell you that you haven’t hunted woods until you’ve been in our bush. Contac us now to get started on your Canadian Trophy Deer Hunt. Put the odds in your favor, be one of the few to bag a true northwoods trophy buck.
